The process of creating a Romare Bearden inspired collage was tedious and involved a vast amount of creativity and thought. I had to skillfully design a mixed-media collage based off of an MLK quote using magazine cutouts, construction paper, mod-podge, paint, cardboard, and Burlap. I purposefully designed a heart to be at the foreground. In the background, I chose to go with a sky collaged from various strip as opposed to the circular, oval shaped strips in the middle ground to make it stand out more, while also creating unity between the two. I balanced the composition by adding burlap sun-rays to branch off from the heart. I chose to go with black and darker blues and grays to blend into lighter blues and pale whites.
I chose to go with this specific piece because I felt like it successfully reiterated the quote a chose, which was in short, Darkness can not drive out Darkness, only light can do that. Which was the main inspiration throughout the piece, while also focusing on hate can not drive out hate, only love can do that. My piece is mainly demonstrating how with love at the center, it can drive out both hate and darkness, which is why I chose to title my piece, "Center of it all", much like the popular gospel song, being that Jesus's composition is collaged in the center of the heart. Which I also used as an allusion and imagery to say that Jesus is really the center of it all.
