Well, it's the end of the year, and you've reached my final project, wooh-hooh! I can't believe it either. After creating projects with rules and guidelines all semester, it felt good to finally have full artistic freedom. I figured, like the rest of my classmates, it would be fairly easy to choose anything at all, our horizons were broad. Turns out, it was even harder! There were endless possibilities to choose from, which made indecisiveness a consistent problem to deal with, there were sooo many options to choose from. So I did what any normal person would do...I went to Google! Yes, Google, and I typed "DIY art projects". To my dismay, that did not narrow down my options, I have to say, Google was a little too thorough. I finally found a site that seemed promising, it was a DIY on wall decor. And I though, "hmm, this could work." After some more searching, I found something I thought suitable to do in the time limit I had. It was a simple (or so I thought) collage piece with a quote on it. All I had to do was find a canvas, collage colorful prints on it, paste some letters down, peel them off, and viola! A beautiful piece of wall decor!
*Cough* Um...not even close. Once I peeled off (or tried to rather) the letters after painting over them three days prior, I found that they had practically been cemented on!It came off in pieces, leaving my canvas looking like a complete and utter "hot mess". I was beyond ready to just give up on it, it was destroyed, rendered unsuitable and unpleasing to the eyes, especially my eyes. My classmates, and even my art teacher thought it gave it a cool "distressed mess" feel. Puh-leease! It was just a mess entirely, hahaha. But my wonderful art teacher believed there was still room to salvage what was left of it. She kept saying "try to peel all the letters off first, try to peel off all the letters first", so I did. And then, I had the idea to outline the letters. At first I thought of going with just a black marker, but that was no fun, so I headed to the trusty art sanctuary (aka the closet) and found some felt paint, glittery ones at that, and I took to saving my poor "self-directed-mess".
Things were looking up! With the letters coming into play, I started thinking, hey, this might not be so bad after all! It was finally taking form, looking better then what it had since I started peeling off paper! I was starting to see what they meant about the distresed part. There were still pieces of paper residue left that wouldn't come off completely, but it only added to the dimension and composition of the piece, it added depth, and I was loving it! By the time I finished, I was once again, in love, and I was glad my teacher hadn't allowed me to give up on it! Self-directed it was, and it was almost directed right down the drain, but...in the end, it turned out better then what I had planned for it. It's by far my favorite piece, and one that I made on my own, the quote I used was one of my favorite bible verses..."...She laughs without fear of the future." And I totally do, which is why this will hang in my dorm room come the fall, and I've titled it...."Laughing through the mess", because life can get messy, but in the end, it may just surprise you.
It's been fun guys, The Art of Creating....over and out!
